From Living Room to Salon: My Natural Hair Journey and Lessons Learned

When I think back on my journey as a loctician and natural hair specialist, I'm reminded that it didn't start with a salon, product line or client list. It started in the living room of my two-bedroom apartment (and for some of my clients, further back than that). Though conditions weren't ideal for what I wanted to pursue (VERY limited space and a mountain of stairs just to get in the door lol), I was determined to make a difference in how people cared for their locs and natural hair.
The Earlier Days
I began out of passion, before professionalism, like many stylists. Family and friends trusted me with their braids, twists and locs. Of course, back then I didn't realize I was laying the foundation for something much bigger. Every style I created, was essentially becoming a calling card, and soon word of mouth was creating connections that led back to me doing another head and gaining clients.
Growing Into My Craft
Over the years, I invested time in mastering different techniques, from retwists and interlocking, to color and advanced styling, while still continuing with my first love, braiding. But more than that, I began to focus in on the science of hair health. I quickly saw how scalp care, product choice, and maintenance routines could make or break someone's hair journey.
That's when my philosophy of "healthy hair first" was born. I decided that I would never sacrifice the health of my clients' hair for a temporary style or a dollar amount.
From a Chair to a Studio
The transition from my living room to my own salon was more than a career move-it was a commitment to creating a space where clients felt celebrated, educated and comfortable. I wanted it to become a home for people embracing their natural hair journeys, whether they were just starting locs, transitioning from relaxers, or exploring protective styles.
Clients who sit in my chair aren't just clients; they're part of my story. Each one has taught me something new about patience, resilience and the beauty of individuality. I thrive on authenticity, and I love that for all of my clients.
Lessons Along the Way
Looking back, here are a few lessons that shaped me and continue to guide my work:
Growth is a process, not an overnight success.
Just like locs, building a business takes time, consistency and faith. Trust in the process!
Education is empowerment.
The more clients know about their hair, the more confident and intentional they are in their journey.
Authenticity wins every time.
I never needed a celebrity in my chair to feel successful-my clients are everyday icons, walking billboards, and my biggest supporters.
Why This Blog Exists
Starting this blog is my next step in expanding that mission. Here I'll be sharing tips on loc maintenance, natural hair regimens, product knowledge, healthy hair practices, and yes-stories from behind the chair. My hope is that it will be a trusted resource for anyone committed to loving their natural hair the healthy way.
Because at the end of the day, this is bigger than hairstyles. It's about community, confidence and care.
So, welcome to my blog! Whether you're new to your journey or years in, I'm glad you're here! Let's grow together!
